Beating the Beavers

Jackson, Miss. – Mississippi has been getting hit with a lot of rain recently and flooding can be an issue for those of you living near the water especially if your waterway has a beaver problem. According to Kris Godwin, State Director for USDA, beavers tend to be very active this time of the year because of cold weather and wet conditions.

"They are a blessing and a curse for a lot of folks. They are great for making duck holes, that duck hunter like. They do hold water which can be a benefit especially in years where we have had a draught, but at the same time they can cause a lot of problems especially near roads," said Godwin

Godin said if beavers are causing flooding problems destroying the damn will not fix the problem. You must get rid of the beaver.

“Trapping is the most effective method."

She said it is best to call a private nuisance control or wildlife services with USDA.

Also, beavers are considered a nuisance species in the state of Mississippi and you are able to hunt them year-round.
