Chunky River Drowning Victim Found

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. -- An autopsy is being done today on the body of the man that disappeared after a canoeing accident on the Chunky River in Lauderdale County two weeks ago.

The body of Marcus Smith was pulled from the water Saturday.  Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobbler, III was there.  “Did not have a chance to completely view the body.  Uh, we did not want to destroy any evidence, if there was any on it for any reason,” said Cobbler.  “But from what I see, it all appears to be accidental drowning.”

Smith was in a canoe on the river last month when it flipped over.  “When he was retrieved from the water, he did not have on a life jacket.  So, I’m not sure if he had that on or not when the accident happened.’

Two others were in that canoe.  They both managed to swim to safety.
