CLARKSDALE, Miss.—The 2013 Clarksdale mayoral race is starting to become clearer now.
There are two candidates that have distinguished themselves as the top prospects.
They are former Mississippi gubernatorial candidate Bill Luckett and Mississippi Representative Chuck Espy (D-MS 26th district).
Political consultant and former Clarksdale mayor John Mayo says, “I think Representative Espy wants to continue that family dynasty name.” He is referring to the family ties the Espy’s have in the state in the political arena.
Mayo spoke on Bill Luckett and who he is also.
“Bill is mainly a business attorney and he’s giving up a very lucrative business practice [to become mayor].”
Luckett is nationally known in attorney circles according to Mayo and is responsible for bringing a lot of tourism to that area in the delta.
The two main issues to the election Mayo says are “crime and economics”.
“The issues all around the delta are all the same and that’s what they’ll be facing,” he added.
Mayo added tourism to the area and growing that will be important moving forward also.
