Close Race for Lincoln County Clerk-Not So Close for Attala Sheriff

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.--Attala County residents lost a beloved doctor and their county sheriff just two days apart back in May. While Dr. Gary Holdiness held an esteemed position in the community, it was Sheriff William Lee who would be replaced by voters. Acting Sheriff Tim Nail got the job decisively in a Tuesday run-off election between himself and Lexington Police Chief Martin Roby.

While both men are long-time law enforcement vets, Nail's victory means he will serve out the remaining three years of Lee's post, left vacant when he died of cancer after easily winning re-election last year.

In Lincoln County, it was a narrow victory for Capt. Dustin Bairfield. He beat Jane Sisco with 53 percent of the vote in the race for circuit clerk. The two were pitted against each other to fill the seat of Terry Lynn Watkins, the long-time circuit clerk who resigned amid a scandal that led to a misdemeanor conviction.

In Calhoun County, Romona Tillman of Pittsboro beat Susan Wade for the Chancery Clerk position, with more than 60 percent of the vote.
