Keeping guns out of the hands of bad guys was the goal.
"We had a combination of 54 rifles and shotguns, four BB guns and eight handguns," said Police Chief Sylvane McQueen. "The mayor and the city council have voted to destroy those weapons."
The chief told WCBI-TV that he's calling for private donations to make another program happen because the department has run out of funds.
It was unclear if any illegal guns were collected. The program was similar to ones happening nation-wide.
