Funerals, Wake Set for Choctaw Family, Friend

CHOCTAW, Miss.--A wake has been set for 2 p.m. Tuesday for the five children who died after the SUV they were riding in ran off the road and into a swollen creek early Saturday. Funerals have been planned for the kids and for the family friend who also died. Kicks967.com reports the wake will be at the Pearl River Facility Building in Choctaw at 2 p.m.

All who died were members of the Miss. Band of Choctaw Indians.

Funerals for the children, 9-year-old Daisyanna John; 8-year-old Duane John; 7-year-old Bobby John; 4-year-old Quinton John; and 18-month-old Kekambas John, were set for Wednesday at the same facility at 2 p.m.

The childrens' father, Duane John, remained in the hospital after inhaling water and for hypothermia.

The funeral for Diane Chickaway, 37, was set for Thursday at 2 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church in Leake County.

Sheriff Tommy Waddell told media the family likely died of drowning after their Dodge Durango plunged into a creek that was turned into a much larger body of water by rains Christmas Day and Friday.
