Highway Patrol Enforcement Period Begins Tonight

JACKSON, Miss.--No matter where you travel in Mississippi over the Christmas weekend, you are likely to see the familiar sight of flashing blue lights. The Mississippi Highway Patrol will be out in full force, with safety checkpoints amd extra patrols as motorists travel to see family.

"The enforcement period begins at 6 p.m., Friday the 21st, and goes through Christmas Day, ending at midnight," said Warren Strain, spokesperson for the Highway Patrol.

He told us it's a federal grant on just over $100,000 that's making it possible for the agency to step up their efforts to keep drunk drivers off the road and keep violators of all sorts in check.

“We will be out in force over the holiday period, trying to make sure holiday traverls are safe and arrive at their destination to enjoy the holidays with their family,” said Mississippi Public Safety Commissioner Albert Santa Cruz.

The big message is, as always, don't drive under the influence.
