Miss. Tour Bus Catches Fire

By: Knox Graham

ROBERTSDALE, Ala.—A return trip back to Mississippi after vacation turns scary quick.

A large group from Holmes County was headed back into the state.  Durant Police Chief John Haynes said after being in the bus about two hours and passing through Robertsdale, Ala. they heard a loud pop.

“It sounded like a blowout and we did see smoke,” he said.

That when he said everyone in the bus started to look towards the bottom of the bus out the window.

“A passenger yelled fire.”

He said that’s when panic started to set in on the bus passengers.

“I yelled everyone get off the bus,” Haynes stated.

It took about a minute and a half to get of the bus according to Haynes, but his nephew who was in the bathroom couldn’t unlock the bathroom door, which was stuck.

He said one the members had to run back on the bus and help him get out of the bathroom while the bus was starting to catch fire rapidly.  His nephew was eventually able to get out and exit the bus.

Haynes said,” We are lucky and blessed.”

The group was eventually able to get back home after another bus was sent to pick them up.
