JACKSON, Miss. – The sound of troops returning from Afghanistan was like music to the ears of friends and family armed with welcome signs and their love and affection as they greeted the 172nd guardsmen Wednesday afternoon at Thomson Field.
While overseas in Afghanistan the 26 guardsmen were in charge of base defense at where they were stationed and patrolling surrounding villages. On their return they had one more obstacle in their path: flight delays from Hurricane Sandy.
“It’s was a big downer once we got in and saw all the flights had been canceled,” said one guardsman.
Another told me, “Just being in the states period felt better than being in Afghanistan, away form my family.”
Now that they are back the troops told me they are looking forward to getting rest and spending time with their families. One of the guardsmen told me he was just looking forward to kicking his boots off and standing barefoot in the grass.
