Mississippians Voice Their Ideas Around the State

JACKSON, Miss. -- Several attended the public ideas meeting at the State Capitol in Jackson Monday morning hosted by Mississippi House Speaker, Philip Gunn, as part of his "Ideas Tour." The meeting was a way for Mississippians to voice their ideas and concerns for legislators to consider. Other hearings followed that day in Greenwood and Hernando.

This is what some Mississippians had to say.

"I'd like to see something that restricts cities like Jackson from running business out of the state. They tax 'em high enough they'll leave. I've often referred to it as a fine for staying in cities in Mississippi."

"We need to increase our liquor tax and our wine tax and devote that money to substance abuse, getting those people treated"

"We do not need to take another run at parenthood legislation. This is still conceived government intervention in the lives of individuals and families. Such a bill is also subject to unintended and unfortunate confounding legal consequences. You want a smaller government that is less involved int he every day lives of people? This is a good place to start."

"You can ask most entrepreneurs if they know where to get help. They have no clue. We have resources in this state but no one steering this thing."

"Forty-five states around the country currently have a trust-fund to provide a state resource housing fund needs. An affordable housing trust-fund would expand housing opportunities for Mississippi children who deserve a stable place to call home so they can be healthier, do better in school, and have more opportunities in life."

"We do not need an immigration bill that stigmatizes, criminalizes, marginalizes or intimidates immigrant members of our community weather documented or not.  We do not need to turn our police and sheriff's departments into immigration police."

The ideas tour will continue Oct. 9 with meetings at 9 a.m. at Tupelo City Hall, 1:30 p.m. at Columbus City Hall, and 5 p.m. at Meridian City hall.  On Oct. 11 meetings will be held at 9 a.m. at the Cultural Center in Hattiesburg and 1:30 p.m. at Biloxi City Hall. On Oct. 12 the final meeting will be held at State Bank and Trust in Brookhaven.
