JACKSON, Miss.--The new school accountability ratings have been released. Schools and districts now get a A to F rating and, according to the report, more schools were in the top categories. That may have had to do with dropping graduation numbers from requirements for a good rating. Only three districts got an “A”-Pass Christian, Enterprise and Clinton. They previously had a "Star" rating. Some schools or districts with a "Star" rating in 2011 got a "B". Forty-seven districts got a “B” rating. Sixty-six percent got a "C" or lower.
The rating system was put in place as part of legislation passed this year lawmakers said would make it easier for parents to understand how their schools are performing. The "A" to "F" scale is based on how parents understand a student's report card.
Gov. Phil Bryant said at a press conference earlier this summer that you can look for more education reforms in the upcoming legislative session. Some of the initiatives being pushed by Republicans, who control the state House and Senate, include charter schools (with split opinions on whether they should be placed in failing districts or available to any district), performance-based pay for teachers, and the adoption of a philosophy being touted by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush that uses standardized testing as the benchmark for a students performance, which Democrats oppose on a national level.
While some state Democrats agree with charter school legislation, it is believed many will oppose upcoming measures like performance-based pay, on the grounds that long-term educators could be overlooked for pay raises. Some have questioned the standards by which a teacher may be judged, which is still being hashed out by a committee.
