Ole Miss Professor Takes on Space

By: Knox Graham

OXFORD, Miss—One University of Mississippi professor has teamed up again with NASA for space-research.

Graduate School Dean John Z. Kiss has sent plant seeds up into space to test the feasibility of growing crops and plants on Mars, among other things.

“It was launched on spaceX-2 to the international space station last Friday,” said Kiss.

Kiss said he is interested in the project from a pure scientific standpoint but NASA is more interested in how this could affect long-term missions to the Moon or Mars.

“To specifically understand how the micro-gravity environment affects plant growth,” he said.

The project won’t take long to get underway up above either.

“It will probably start later this month.”

This launch is only the first part of several experiments that will take place along these lines at the international space station.
