JACKSON, Miss.-- The Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in Connecticut brings back familiar memories for some Mississippians.
It was the first day of October in 1997 when 16-year-old Luke Woodham killed two students and injured seven others at Pearl High School.
Dr. Williams Dodson the Pearl School District Superintendent in 1997 said, "It unleashes those feelings you have, it did to me, as I heard what happened [in Connecticut]."
Dodson points out some of the things he thought about when hearing the news.
"There were several parallels with this shooting [Sandy Hook shooting] and ours. He killed his mother before also."
He's referring to both Woodham and accused shooter Adam Lanza of Sandy Hook taking their mothers' lives before proceeding to go on their rampage.
Lanza is accused of shooting 26 others at the school, including 20 children, after killing his mother.
Dodson added, "We're certainly just hopeful that incidents such as this with innocent children will not continue in our country."
He was quick to point out that if it wasn't for a few heroic people in 1997 on that day the damage inflicted at PHS could have been much worse.
