JACKSON, Miss.--A replacement for the late Sen. Alice Harden will be chosen by voters in Dist. 28 today. The district includes parts of the Jackson metro. Harden served for 24 years and died late last year.
Campaigning to serve out the three years left in her terms are former councilman Marshand Crisler, immigrant rights activist Kathy Sykes, funeral director Jimmy Stewart, Sollie B. Norwood, realtor Tommy L. Wallace, II, Antonio Porter, Cassandra Welchlin, Cathy Ayers-Elliot and Harden's neice, Tamarra Grace Butler.
Polls are open, as in most elections, from 7 to 7 and if there is no clear winner (50 percent, plus one), there will be a run-off Feb. 26.
Harden was an educator and the first African-American female state senator in Mississippi.
