JACKSON, Miss.—Students and faculty being honored at Higher Education Appreciation Day converged Tuesday in Jackson.
The event honored one outstanding student and faculty member from each college and university in the state for their efforts.
“Education has always been the most important part of what I do,” said Ole Miss Professor Dr. John O’Haver who was their faculty honoree.
The event held at the Jackson Marriott had plenty of students on hand as well.
“It’s a great honor, I’m really humbled by this experience,” said Ole Miss ASB president Kimberly Dandridge who was the student honoree. “I’m proud to see so many people are continuing to make education in the state move forward.”
Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves was in attendance along with former U.S. Education Secretary Dr. William Bennett who was the guest speaker at the event.
News Mississippi was able to catch up with Bennett before he stepped to the podium and he was frank with his remarks about problems facing education in the country presently.
“We spend $450 billion a year in this country, and many people think we’re not getting our moneys worth,” he said.
He used a simple example to prove his point.
“We have a lot of college graduates these days that owe a lot of money and don’t have jobs.”
He stressed the education system overall needs more accountability than it currently has in order for it to move forward in the coming years.
