JACKSON, Miss. – Black females are one of the lowest demographics in the engineering field. Dr. Carl Mack, Executive Director for the National Society of Black Engineers, plans on brining a solution to the problem. He has been traveling around the country exposing kids engineering using hands on activities. Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) is seeking out youth in Mississippi. This summer their goal is to reach out to 300 African American girls in the state.
“Not in the history of this great nation has there ever been an engineering camp that lay can claim to having 300 African American little girls being exposed to engineering. This camp is going to be historic in its inception,” said Mack. “This is our hope for a new day, not a politician, nothing else, these kids are a hope for a new day.”
“If we want all of those industries to come here with those hi tech jobs, we better have the technical staff to do it."
He says their target are African American girls between third and firth grade, they but will not turn down others who seek education. The program is free and first come first serve. Register now, it takes place July 24th at New Hope Baptist Church in Jackson.
