Suspect in Death of Openly Gay Candidate Now In Mississippi Custody

COAHOMA COUNTY, Miss. --The man accused of killing Clarksdale Mayoral Candidate Marco McMillian is back in the state to face a murder charge.

Shelby County deputies handed Lawrence Reed over to Mississippi investigators Wednesday.  Reed had been at the Tennessee jail since being released from a Memphis hospital where he was taken after wrecking McMillian’s car.  McMillian wasn’t in the vehicle.  His body was found the next day.  Family members say he had been beaten and burned.

The slaying received significant attention, in part, because McMillian's campaign said he was the first openly gay, viable candidate for public office in Mississippi.
