JACKSON, Miss – A train derailed in Hinds County around 7 a.m. Friday near Jackson’s water treatment plant. According to Patrick Waldron, spokesperson for Canadian National Railway, 18 cars were derailed, 17 of those were filled with grain. There were no injuries and no hazardous material was involved. An investigation is ongoing to determine what caused the train to derail.
Officials are working to clear up the railway and repair the track.
“This is our main corridor between Jackson Mississippi and New Orleans. It is what we would call out of service, while they do this cleanup and repair. Other trains will be delayed,” said Waldron.
According to Amtrak officials, damage on the railway means their passengers will be making a detour. Amtrak will operate charter buses between Jackson and Hattiesburg for passengers traveling to and from New Orleans.
