Tupelo Senator Pushes for Law to Educate Children on Sexual Abuse

JACKSON, Miss. – Erin’s Law is a bill you need to look out for in the 2013 legislative session. Republican Senator Nancy Collins from Tupelo is fronting the bill with help from Democratic Representative Tom Miles. The bill is all about educating children to protect them from sexual predators.

“We teach children about fire drills, bus drills, tornado drills, learning to say no to drugs. We do no teach them what is safe touch and unsafe touch. It is a delicate issue but I do no believe we cannot sweep this under the rug. This is an epidemic in our society. One in four girls and one in seven boys by the age of 18 have been sexually abused and usually they know their perpetrator,” says Senator Collins

“I was one of those child victims, and I never said anything until I was 40. For the last 20 years I have talked to small groups of children just to encourage them that this is something they need to go to somebody they trust and tell about it. This is something we’ve got to have because of the epidemic of child abuse. If this were a disease we would allocate resources for it to wipe it out tomorrow.”

Erin’s Law has become law in six other states, but failed in last year’ legislative session.
