Mississippi/Florida Both Prepare for Isaac
by Chris Davis
GULFPORT, Miss.--Some of the latest forecast models have Tropical Storm Isaac reaching hurricane strength and coming ashore on the Mississippi-Alabama line next week. That's after it makes a pass over Florida.
But, its exact course remains uncertain.
"Tropical Storm Isaac is not getting stronger. That's good news at this point," said hurricane specialst Chris Landsea, with the National Hurricane Center. "Peak winds remain at 45 mph. It's gonna be impacting primarily, the Dominican Republic and Haiti."
It's where it goes after that that has both Republicans headed for Tampa and Gulf Coast residents concerned.
U.S. Congressman Gregg Harper, from Mississippi, is headed to the convention.
"Even if the models are right and it goes to Tampa, you're gonna lose maybe Monday of the convention," he said. "The key nights of a convention are Wednesday, when the vice-presidential nominee speaks and Thursday when the presidential niminee speaks."
Meanwhile, Mississippi's Salvation Army branch is making preparations. A spokesperson told News Mississippi's Chip Ward that they have food and supplies in Jackson that can be moved to the coast or anywhere else, should the need arise.
