Jackson, Miss.-- September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month and nearly 250,000 people in Mississippi may be carriers of the disease.
Jeanine Julius, Mississippi Sickle Cell Foundation support group chairmen says, "If you have the trait and your spouse has the trait then there will be that possibility of the child having sickle cell." She also says the best way to know if you are a carrier is to get tested.
The disease can be treated with a bone marrow transplant but Dr. Joshua Williams says , "Those are very uncommon among adults and also because the lack of bone marrow matches for minorities." Williams did say that there are ways to manage the disease though.
