JACKSON, Miss.-- Tonight is the kick off for one of the state's biggest events in Jackson.
Mississippi Ag commissioner Cindy Hyde Smith said, "At five o'clock we will cut the ribbon to open the state fair."
The Mississippi State Fair isn't young, to say the least.
Smith added, "This will be the 153rd state fair."
Food vendors and ride operators have gotten all settled in over the last few weeks as the fairgrounds came to life.
Smith closed with, "We are prepared to show Mississippians this is the place to be and in such a family environment."
The musical lineup includes Thompson Square tonight along with notables such as Loretta Lynn and Chubby Checker at later dates.
The fair ends October 14th.
