Healthcare in Mississippi: A Summit and a Tour

JACKSON, Miss.--Everybody's gotta go to the doctor sometime and that can mean at least two things in Mississippi. You're probably feeling like you're paying too much when you go and you've probably heard our governor wants to turn the industry into an economic boon for the state. Both issues will be addressed this month.

The first issue is leading the country through one of the biggest political debates there's ever been and promises to continue to divide the nation into those who favor a socialised health care system, and those who want free enterprise to settle the matter.

Gov. Braynt is set to speak on Health Care Reform at the Third Annual Mississippi Health Care Reform summit, set for noon Wednesday at Mississippi College in Clinton. That's at Anderson Hall.

On the second issue, the possibility that health care could create a big business opportunity state-wide, the governor is set to go on a one-day tour across the state.

A news release from Bryant's camp says a new study has been completed called "Health Care: An Economic Driver". The Miss. Economic Council's M.B. Swayze Foundation gets credit for the report. Bryant is set to discuss the results Oct. 26, with the following stops:
  • 7:30-9 a.m. at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center located at 2350 Beach Blvd. in Biloxi
  • 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Summit Center located at 852 North Gloster St., in Tupelo
  • 3:30-5 p.m. at the Hilton located at 1001 East County Line Rd. in Jackson
The tour and the report are the result of legislation that went into effect in July, that mandated incentives for health care-related businesses that locate in health care zones set up by the state.

Following the measure’s effective date, medical device provider Teleflex Incorporated located a new distribution facility in Olive Branch, Miss. The company expects to employ more than 200 workers in the coming years, said the news release.

The report examines the importance of the health care industry in Mississippi and analyzes industry aspects, including regulations, business climate and workforce. The report also explores potential growth areas, including businesses that support health care, said release.

“Health care is an industry of necessity, and I am committed to fostering a positive environment for medical development that will increase both economic opportunities and access to cutting edge medical care,” said Bryant. “I appreciate the work of the MEC and look forward to traveling the state to share the ideas that will help grow the health care economy in Mississippi.”
The meetings are open to the public.
