JACKSON, Miss. -- A bill to educate children on identifying and reporting sexual abuse is expected to gain bipartisan support. Republican Sen. Nancy Collins and Democratic Representative Tom Miles will introduce Erin’s Law in the 2013 legislative session.
“We teach children about a lot of things that they need to be cautious around. I’d hate to say we need to start warning little children, but we just need to do it in a gentle way. I think schools are the appropriate place to do that. Also, they need to know they can tell someone if there has been an inappropriate gesture towards them,” says Sen. Nancy Collins.
Erin’s Law has already passed Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Maine. The bill failed in Mississippi's 2012 legislative session but Sen. Collins has high hopes for the bill this year.
