Totten was wanted in Marshall County after authorities there say he escaped when they tried to arrest him on burglary charges on April 9. Cops say he rammed a county vehicle, eventually hit a tree with his own car, then ran into the woods. A helicopter searched failed to turn him up. Deputies then placed him in the National Crime Information Center database as a fugitive from justice.
Six months went by before he was flagged and arrested in Florida. A news release from Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson said the department was working on getting him back to his home state when the folks in Miami released him.
A news release from Marshall County Sheriff's Dept. spokesman Jimmy Warren told how he was recaptured Tuesday morning.
A detective from (Miami) called Major Kelly Mcmillen around 10 a.m. and stated that Totten had returned to retrieve several items of personal property which were taken from him when he was booked yesterday. Officers at that location were aware that Totten had been released in error yesterday afternoon and these officers again took Totten in custody.
Major Mcmillen was assured by the reporting detective that Totten would be taken to and held in the Dade County Jail to await extradition to the State of Mississippi and that he would be held until he was picked up by Mississippi authorities.
