Exploitation Arrest: Woman Accused of Benefitting Herself With Checks

NEW ALBANY, Miss.--Exploitation of a vulnerable adult, more specifically someone in a care home, is the charge against 38-year-old Jessica Lowery of Hickory Flat. She turned herself in to cops Tuesday, according to Attorney Gen. Jim Hood.

Hood told News Mississippi that while she worked as a resident assistant at Magnolia Place Assisted Living Facility in New Albany, Lowery told an elderly person who lived there she needed checks to buy that person's personal items, but instead used the checks for herself. Eight checks was the total.

Hood did not say exactly how much Lowery was able to get, but her indictment by a Union County Grand Jury also said she forged another check and pocketed the cash.

This is from a news release from the attorney general's office:
Lowery’s bond was set at $5,000.  She is scheduled to make her initial court appearance on October 29  in Union County.

The uttering a forgery charge carries a penalty of not less than two years and up to ten years imprisonment upon conviction, and/or a fine of up to $10,000.  In cases where the amount of the forgery is less than $500, which is applicable in this case, the judge has the discretion to sentence the individual to a term of not more than six months in the county jail, and/or a fine of up to $1,000.  The exploitation charge carries a sentence of up to ten years imprisonment.
