GREENVILLE, Miss. – Greenville voters are heading to the polls today to elect a new Mayor.
Four candidates are in the running for the job: John Cox, Carl McGee, Cassandra Wilson McMiller, and Phil Vazzana.
City Clerk Amelia Wicks has already been out touring polling percents. While she says voter turnout is higher than she expected, there is a problem. “What I am seeing, unfortunately, is a higher number of affidavit ballots than anticipated.”
Here’s what she thinks caused that problem: “ When the county put in their information for redistricting, they inadvertently made some areas on our city wards,” she explained.
While Wicks says that will lead to a lot of tedious counting tonight for the city’s election commissioners, in the morning, Greenville should still have a new mayor.
The winner will serve the unexpired term of Chuck Jordan. He has been diagnosed with cancer, and resigned just months after being sworn in.
