Mississippi Recycles

JACKSON Miss. – Mississippians remembered to recycle for America Recycles Day. I went to a recycling event at Smith Park in Jackson where I learned about recycling in Mississippi.

“Recycling helps conserve energy, we use less energy when we reuse materials as opposed to extracting from the environment,” says. You conserve 95% of the energy used to process an aluminum can when recycled materials are used as opposed to extracting those materials from the environment,” says Mark Williams with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

“About 50 percent of the state has access to community based recycling. It’s usually easier to do it in more populated areas.”

But how des the other 50 percent of the state recycle? Williams says many communities have started their own efforts.

“First off talk to your local government about how you can get recycling. If you aren’t in a large city, start with a drop off program. That has happened in a lot of areas. We had volunteers in the city of Canton that helped the city to start a voluntary drop off program.

Williams tells me citizen-recycling programs have been starting up all over the state. In Calhoun County and Brookhaven they have recycling drop off programs and in Natchez, drop off programs for recycled materials are starting up. These efforts show more and more Mississippians want recycling.
