NEW YORK, N.Y.--About 15,000 Hostess worker were expected to get their notices this week as a federal judge in New York decided to allow the liquidation of Hostess assets. Mississippi has Hostess-related businesses in Tupelo, Oxford, Clarksdale, Natchez, Greenwood, Gulfport and other cities.
What happens now-about 3,200 workers keep their jobs nation-wide, for the time being. Eventually about five percent will stay with the company as its remaining assets are sold off. That could include the Twinkie and Wonder Bread brands, which are expected to go on the auction block.
There had been hope that a last-minute mediation session between Hostess and the union representing its workers would keep things going. But, negotiations broke down, the mediation collapsed and with all hope of keeping Hostess in tact, as is. The brand goes back about 82 years.
