The competition involved what you might expect, horses, cowboys and cattle. The riders were skilled, and some, like Patrick Hemphill of McComb, have been doing it nearly all their lives.
I asked him where he's competed.
"Alabama, Oklahoma City, all over Texas, all over Florida," he said. His buddy told me I should've asked where he hadn't roped instead.
I also asked what makes being able to compete in Mississippi means to him.
"It's one of my favorite places to come. It's a really nice arena-somewhere where all of your buddies grew up roping with-it's kind of like a reunion."
The next stop on the championship tour is Wickenburg, Arizona, then on to Tulsa.
