Frmr. Greene County Clerk Sentenced-Investigation Not Over

GREENE COUNTY, Miss.--The former Greene County Chancery Clerk took money by submitting false statements, said a court after 48-year-old Latricia Cornelson pled guilty Monday. Cornelson served in that capacity from 2005 to 2007.

State Auditor Stacey Pickering said in a statement Monday that Cornelson will have to pay $6,000 in resitiution to the taxpayers. She also owes $2,000 in fines and court costs. Cornelson got a ten-year jail term that was suspended, with four years probation.

But, the district attorney said it may not be over.

"This has been a long term investigation that will not end with this plea today. My office is committed to continue to investigate any allegations of public corruption.  This is another step in ensuring that government works for the people and does not steal from the people," he said.

“I am pleased with the sentence handed down to Latricia Cornelson by the Circuit Court,” said Pickering. “This case should serve as a reminder to public employees that my office will investigate and assist in the prosecution of any individual who betrays the public trust.  I appreciate the efforts of District Attorney Tony Lawrence in the prosecution of this case.”

Cornelson also agreed never to work in city, county or state government again.
