Singing Christmas Tree Puts Miss. on the Christmas Map

JACKSON, Miss.--A giant lighted tree filled with carolers puts Mississippi on the Christmas tradition map. The Belhaven Singing Christmas Tree at Belhaven University is the oldest of its kind in North America. Friday's performance was the 80th.

The tradition includes a large lighted tree, with a choir that, in the past, held lights or candles while singing secular and religious Christmas tunes. In recent years, the lights have been electronic and automatic, meaning the crowd sees a bit of a rhythmic light show while the choir cings.

The 80th performance included current students, faculty and singers from the Tree's history. One singer was there from 1944 to 1947.
