VICKSBURG, Miss. -- The US Army Corp of Engineers, Vicksburg District will host its annual Physically Challenged Deer Hunt this weekend at Arkabutla Lake, near Coldwater.
It’s an opportunity that hundreds have been hoping for; but only 64 lucky ones will be there. They were selected through a random drawing this past September. “These people ranged from Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Louisiana; and some even from Florida,” said Corp spokesperson Kavenaugh Brazeal.
Those hunters will use muzzle loading primitive rifles or shotguns and will be stated in foliage-covered plywood box stands. “There are some stands there, box stands, that enable a handicap hunter to ride to the sand on his ATV or 4-wheeler, and sit on the 4-wheeler as he hunts,” explained Brazeal.
Some local citizens and businesses will be there along with the Corp to help the disabled hunters at the stand. They will also provide food.
If you, or someone you know, want to sign up for next year’s handicapped hunt, you need to fill out an application now. For more information call Brazeal at 601-631-5052, or contact Mike Carter at 662-562-6261.
