Flu is Here and a New National Map Has Mississippi Ranked High

NEW YORK, New York--A new national map Tweeted out Tuesday by the USA Today shows Mississippi with a high level of flu activity. We spoke with State Epidemiologist Dr. Thomas Dobbs, who told us the Magnolia State has been in that category for at least two weeks.

"It's a little bit earlier than average and it's also been on an aggressive uptick," he said. "We've had a lot of cases come on quickly."

To keep from getting the flu, Dobbs said the best way is through the flu vaccine, which you can get at any county health department for $25.

"It may not be perfect, but it's the best way to protect people from the flu."

Some people may be reluctant because they believe the vaccine may not catch the particular strain that's going around.

"This year, so far, when looking at the flu strains that have been submitted to us, it has been a good match for Mississippi. Nation-wide it's been a good match."

Aside from the vaccine, Dobbs said you should wash your hands frequently, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and stay home from work when you are sick.
