In Lucedale a man is dead after a shootout. No IDs had been released as of Monday morning. This is what we know so far. It happened about 1:45 Sunday morning when a man was apparently cutting donuts with his truck. A man from the house next door came out and confronted him. He left and went back to his house. The Sun Herald reports that’s when the driver of the truck went to the house, knocked on the door and began shooting when the man answered. The driver was able to shoot the man and his son before being shot and wounded by a second son. The son is dead, the man is critical.
In Clarksdale an 80-year-old woman was murdered and her body burned. A 17-year-old is being charged. Read more about that crime in this related article.
In Vaiden MBI agents are now looking into the stabbing death of a North Mississippi nurse. Police think Katrina Hemphill was killed Thursday after walking in on someone who had broken into her home.
And in Meridian, a recent uptick in violence there is being blamed on gang activity. Concerned residents gathered Saturday for a "Stop the Violence" rally. The mayor and city police chief were among those there. City leaders are redirecting $100,000 from other city departments to help hire more police officers.
