Claiborne County Officer Shooting Sends Man to Hospital

By: Knox Graham

PORT GIBSON, Miss.-- An officer-related shooting Thursday night sent one suspect to the hospital in Port Gibson after police responded to an unrelated shooting.

Claiborne county Sheriff Marvin Lucas explains how the incident went down in one subdivision.

"We had a call of a young man and someone said there was some shooting going on."

He tells News Mississippi that one of his deputies showed up responding to the call and that's when things got tense very quickly.

When the suspect tried to get away Lucas explained, "The man ran his car into the officer's vehicle and he got out and proceeded to aim the gun towards the deputy."

That proved to be a bad decision once the officer asked him to drop the weapon and the man did not obey.  So what happened next?

"He [the officer] shot him," added Lucas.

The bullet struck the man in the chest and he was airlifted to the University Medical Center in Jackson for treatment.

He was in serious condition late last night but Sheriff Lucas says the latest report he has received is that the suspect is now is stable condition.

No word yet on why the man was supposedly shooting a gun in the area in the first place.
