Six Die in Neshoba County Wreck-SUV Ends Up in Creek

PEARL RIVER, Miss.--The Choctaw community of Pearl River is morning the loss of six Choctaw tribal members in a single-vehicle wreck Saturday morning. Neshoba County Sheriff Tommy Waddell told media the wreck happened about 12:30 a.m. near the Neshoba-Newton County line on a rural county road.

Five of the six killed were children.
Kicks967.com listed the deceased children as 9-year-old Dasyanna John, 8-year-old Duane John, 7-year-old Bobby John, 4-year-old Quinton John, and 18-month-old Kekaimeas John. Family friend Diane Chickaway, 37, also died. The father, Dewayne John, was hospitalized for hypothermia and water inhalation.

There were nine people in the SUV when it left the road and ended up submerged in a small creek about 20 miles southeast of Philadelphia. The remaining two not listed were not seriously hurt in the wreck. It took firefighters several hours to find and recover the Dodge Durango.

The bodies were sent to Jackson for autopsies. They may have died of drowning, according to the sheriff. The Miss. Highway Patrol was expected to send an accident reconstruction team to the site Sunday to determine exactly what happened.

The sheriff told media the creek is normally a small one, but heavy rains Christmas Day and Friday had the creek swollen to well beyond its normal size.
