Mississippians Sworn In for Six-Year US Senate Term

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), on Thursday, took the oath of office during a ceremony in the U.S. Capitol, marking the beginning of the 113th Congress.  In November, Wicker was re-elected to a full six-year term with 57.4 percent of the vote.

“Representing the people of Mississippi in the United States Senate is a great honor that comes with tremendous responsibility,” said Wicker.  “We face a number of challenges that require leadership and cooperation to solve.  Congress and the President must reduce the federal deficit and begin to address the debt.  At $16.4 trillion, the debt is unsustainable, and the problem gets worse each day.  All sides need to have an honest discussion about what we can afford and what we can do without.

Wicker said he plans to try and help his constituents find jobs.

“In addition, far too many Mississippians are unable to find good, long-term employment.  Economic opportunities and job creation are a top priority.  We must rebuild a strong foundation for a lasting economic recovery that will benefit all Americans.  Eliminating unnecessary regulations and promoting American energy production are two important steps in the right direction.

Wicker and Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) both voted "yes" on the Fiscal Cliff deal. The Senate version then went to the House this week, where all three Republican representatives from Mississippi voted "no". Democrat Rep. Bennie Thompson voted "yes".

Wicker was named Deputy Whip by Sen. John Cornyn, (R-Tex.), who was recently elected Senate Republican Whip.  The Whip and his team build support for the Republican legislative agenda.

“I want to thank Sen. Wicker for stepping up to help lead our caucus in the 113th Congress as a part of our Whip team,” said Sen. John Cornyn. “With Sen. Wicker‘s help, Senate Republicans will continue to lead the charge for a conservative agenda that will grow the economy and create jobs while putting our nation on a path towards fiscal prosperity.”
