New Electronic Health Information System Could Cut Cost For Patients

JACKSON, Miss. -- Healthcare providers are partnering up throughout Mississippi in a multi-million dollar cutting edge electronic health care information system. This is expected to improve patient care and ensure more accurate transmission of records. Dr. Mary Currier, State Health Officer for Mississippi State Department of Health says this will cut costs for both the patients and health care providers.

"It improves the knowledge of the physician taking care of the patient because they have all the information about the patient instead of what has just been done in their office," said Dr. Currier.

So if you took X-rays at one hospital, another hospital will be able to access those X-rays.

Eight hospitals, two on the coast and six in the delta, are already actively participating and 22 are currently pending.

"What really pushed this forward in the state was Katrina, the medical system was basically destroyed because there was no backup."

She also assures the network is secure and they meet all hipaa, federal, and state regulations, but patients are able to decline being put in the system.
