JACKSON, Miss.--Some of you are reacting to the possibility that Pres. Obama could use executive orders as part of planned gun control legislation. In the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting, the president assigned Vice-President Biden to meet with industry officials, retailers and others to come up with a plan to reduce gun violence.
The president now says that there may be as many as 19 executive orders, along with possible legislation that could be used to ban "assault weapons", namely the AR-15 or other smaller rifles that have high capacity magazines and which have been used in recent mass shootings. Though the rifles are semi-automatic and are technically not defined as "assault weapons", some are targeting the weapons for a ban.
We asked on News Mississippi's Facebook page if you believe President Obama should use executive orders in gun control measures. The answer was an overwhelming "no". Here are some of your comments:
Obama uses EO to bypass Congress and do whatever he wants. I am not only against him using them for gun control but also for anything else that is not a real and immediate national emergency... which he labels everything he can't get by Congress.
He can issue all the executive orders he wants, I will not comply with any law that limits my rights as a citizen!
No, I believe in the 2nd amendment, and that my rights should not be limited or taken by the government and man that swore to uphold the constitution.
No need for a law degree to know that it's illegal for a president to issue an order that changes the rights guaranteed by the bill of rights!!
He took an oath, as well as his cabinet, an Congress an our Supreme Court to up hold the constitution not skirt around it!!!!!!! Any an all who will not up hold the constitution should be impeached an or REMOVED!!!!
EO can't create or remove amendments but it can be used to expand, reduce, reclassify, or otherwise modify existing law. EO can indirectly "ban" something through technicalities.
