Governor Bryant Speaks Out on Gun Control

By: Knox Graham

JACKON, Miss.—Lawmakers in Jackson got together Wednesday to show their support for Governor Phil Bryant and Speaker Philip Gunn who both spoke against the gun control agenda announced by the Obama administration.

Governor Phil Bryant said instead of having a major overhaul, after numerous tragedies around the country, with executive orders from President Obama the solution is simple.

“Let’s enforce the gun laws we have in the books now,” he said.

He along with Speaker Philip Gunn were adamant that any executive orders than infringed on the 2nd amendment right to bear arms in the constitution would be fought in Mississippi.

“If we’re going to start blaming the weapons, where are we going to stop? This is a dangerous path we’re going down,” Bryant stated.

Speaker of the House Philip Gunn spoke about how what might work in certain cities isn’t necessarily that best option for Mississippi which, in large part, is rural and help is many minutes away or a lot of citizens.

“Under the leadership of the Governor, the Senate, we pledge we will not support and we will oppose any efforts to limit the rights for Mississippians to keep and bear arms,” said Gunn.

The governor spoke on how the restrictions on assault rifles that have been tossed around will in no way stop criminals from committing the massacres that have occurred.

“Criminals will not, trust me on this, they will not follow the law,” he said.

And lastly when Bryant was asked on his thoughts of President Obama saying anyone who doesn’t agree with these gun control suggestions is “promoting fear” he had this to say.

“This president’s rhetoric is more profound than any other I’ve seen, he uses it when it’s to his benefit,” said Bryant.  “But the federal government rather than trying to join into some scheme on the Mexican border to put guns into Mexico, instead they should enforce the gun laws they have now.”

We could be seeing legislation in the near future to protect the rights of Mississippians to bear arms coming from some lawmakers.
