Governor Bryant Signs Proclamation to Hire More Veterans

By: Knox Graham

JACKSON, Miss.—Governor Phil Bryant signed a pledge on Wednesday to help veterans and their families find more work in the state of Mississippi.

“We can never do enough for the men and women that put themselves in harms way.  We understand how difficult it is for veterans to enter the work force,” he said.

There are currently over 28,000 veterans living in the state that have served the country since 9/11 over a decade ago.  The average unemployment rate for those people is over 2% higher than the national average putting it over 10%.

One of the way he’s aiming to do that is bringing that group of soldiers together.

“I’m hosting three Mississippi job fairs in Jackson, Biloxi and Tupelo,” he added.

Those job fairs will kickoff in early March and continue with one each in April and May.

Gov. Bryant is also planning to propose legislation requiring state licensing agencies to consider military job training received by returning veterans who apply for professional licenses.

“These people deserve more than just a hand shake and a pat on the back, we should offer them an opportunity when they return,” he said.

And with that opportunity, help for spouses could be on the way too.  Temporary licenses could be granted to spouses to allow them to work immediately until they get proper documentation in the state.

He used the example for a nurse that can take months to get what they need to be certified and that timetable is too long for families depending on that income.

In closing Gov. Bryant said, “Today I’m declaring 2013 the year to hire more Mississippi heroes.”
