TYLERTOWN, Miss.--James Dustin Lowery will be in prison a very long time. It was a 40-year sentence handed down Thursday after the 28-year-old pleaded guilty to felony child abuse and manslaughter in the death of his girlfriends 16-month-old baby girl.
Prosecutors said Lowery was taking care of the girl when he took her to Walthall County General Hospital. She was pronounced dead there of blunt force trauma to the head.
That's when authorities got several stories from Lowery that didn't add up. One said she fell and hit her head on a bench. Another said she hit her head on concrete.
The 40-year-prison term includes a manslaughter sentence to run concurrently, with 20 years of that suspended.
