Mississippi Connection: Myrlie Evers-Williams Gives Inauguration Speech

By: Knox Graham

Washington, D.C.—The widow of the late civil rights activist Medgar Evers spoke today in front of thousands at President Barack Obama’s second inauguration.

“This is the promise of America,” she opened with early in her speech.

An estimated 700,000 were on hand to see her be part of opening remarks before Obama spoke for twenty minutes on a number of topics.

“We come at this time to ask blessings upon our leaders,” she said.

Obama touched on Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security reform among other things as he heads into his second term with approval rates of his first time only higher than Jimmy Carter among post-WWII presidents.

Evers-Williams closed with, “[America gives] the opportunity to become whatever mankind and womankind allow us to be.”

And on Monday mankind allowed her to be the first woman to deliver the invocation for a presidential inauguration.
