GREENWOOD, Miss. -- The Greenwood doctor charged in an alleged murder-for-hire plot is headed to the Mississippi State Hospital at Whitfield.
A judge has agreed to send Dr. Arnold Smith there for a mental exam. Prosecutors say Smith hired hit men to kill Lee Abraham. That’s the lawyer that represented Smith’s ex-wife during their divorce years ago.
Abraham was not hurt. But one of the men believed to be a hired gunman was killed in a shootout with investigators. Smith is charged with murder as the instigator of the plot that ended with his death, and with conspiring to murder Abraham.
Smith is set to sand trail February 4. But his lawyer says Smith is not mentally competent. He remains in jail with no bond.
