MYRTLE, Miss.—A young driver was struck by a train early Tuesday at a crossing in Union County.
“We don’t know at this point if he was trying to beat the train or if the sun was in his eyes,” said Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards.
Luckily for 18-year-old Benjamin Paist his injuries aren’t life threatening according to the sheriff.
“I think he has some broken bones and some lacerations,” he said. “We don’t know the extent of his injuries now.”
One thing that came into play is that there aren’t any crossing rails at this particular crossing and News Mississippi wanted to know if in the future rails could be added in the future.
Edwards said, “That would be up to Burlington Northern I guess.”
He said that isn’t a county issue and the railroad would be doing an investigation of the crash also.
The sheriff’s department hadn’t been able to speak to Paist since the crash according to Edwards and more details are expected to come out soon.
