JACKSON, Miss. -- Many of you know someone who has been affected or even died from a tobacco related illness. SMART is a new program from the American Lung Association provided by a grant from the Mississippi Department of Health.
It’s a new approach to prevent your child from becoming a tobacco user that targets high school students. Roy Heart with the Mississippi Department of Tobacco Control says the program isn’t just about rambling off facts about tobacco.
“We’re teaching the kids how to self advocate, and to generate interest in changing the environment in which they live, though activities such as passing a local smoke free ordinance," said Heart.

Smoking, smokeless tobacco, and breathing second hand smoke can be deadly to the individuals who use them. Second hand smoke can also be harmful to their friends and family.
