First African American Named to Lead a Historically White Mississippi College

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The State College Board has named Dr. Rodney Bennett as the 10th President of the University of Southern Mississippi.

“The University needs a leader who understands the most critical issues facing higher education today and has the experience and skills necessary to address all facets of the university’s mission, including education, research and service. Dr. Bennett’s experience and his commitment to students demonstrate that he the right person to lead the university at this time,” said Ed Blakeslee, president of the College Board of Trustees.

Bennett now becomes the first black president of any of Mississippi's five predominantly white universities.

“It’s a tremendous honor for me,” said Bennett.  When I applied for this position, I never really thought about the historical significance of it.”

Bennett has said his top priority will be stabilizing USM's finances
