Sex Offenders Who Don't Register-You Could Soon Be Tracked

JACKSON, Miss.--If you're a sex offender and you don't register, you could soon be wearing a GPS tracking device and you could be the one paying for it. The Miss. Senate passed a bill Monday called Lenora's Law, named for Lenora Edhegard, a woman killed by a sex offnder in Rankin County last year. That offender, Cotrell Rose, had not registered his current address.

Sen. Will Longwitz (R-Madison) has pushed for the bill since last year.

"If it were up to me these guys would never get out of jail," he said, "once they've fondled a child, for instance."

Longwitz said the gist of the bill would be to track the 100 or so problem offenders who have a bad track record when it comes to law enforcement keeping up with them.

Mississippi, like all other states, requires sex offenders to register their address and other information. That can be for as much as a lifetime, depending on the offense and the order of the sentencing judge.

Longwitz said that the bill makes the offender pay for the device "as much as possible".
