Southern Miss. Students Taking Charge in Cleanup

By: Knox Graham

HATTIESBURG, Miss.—Only 48 hours after the Sunday night tornado ransacked parts of the Southern Miss campus and Hattiesburg the students there are taking charge.

On Wednesday morning there’s a student cleanup scheduled on campus for 10 a.m.

“There’s over 900 people that are saying they’re going to take part in it,” said USM spokesman Charles Childress.

Classes on campus have been shutdown until Thursday but that hasn’t stopped the Golden Eagle faithful from rallying according to Childress.

“This really just flourished into a full scale event bigger than anyone ever thought.”

He said it started as a movement from the Greek side of things and got so big officials from the school put two faculty members on the case to help organize the event.

The alumni house was destroyed on campus among other things and Childress said the campus has been divided into sectors to help distribute people across the area.

Volunteers for the day are asked to meet in front of the Theatre and Dance Building according to the USM press release.

While this is a student-only cleanup event he said there are plenty of ways for the general public to get involved around the city too.

“There’s the volunteer Hattiesburg Facebook page listing all the opportunities in the city each day.”

Luckily no fatalities have been reported over the last few days since the EF-4 tornado hit.
